A new study published in the journalUrologyfound that a single daily dose of esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, could reduce the risk of heart attack by about 15 percent.
The study was published in theJournal of the American College of Cardiologyon Monday. The study was led by Dr. Peter J. Ricks, M. D., and colleagues.
The researchers tested the effects of the drug on the levels of the enzymes proton pumps inhibitor (PPI), a group of enzymes known as acid pumps, in the heart.
PPI is a type of protein that is responsible for the production of acid in the body. It also regulates the production of acid in the stomach and intestines, and can also lead to inflammation in the digestive tract.
